postmessage_133560″> The study, carried out in Vasto (Province of Chieti) in the years 1999 and 2000, aimed to
evaluate the influence of the (i) tillage techniques, (ii) irrigation regime, (iii) crop genotype on
water use efficiency, soil water depletion and yield of relay intercropping corn (Zea mais L.)
sown after durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.).
The grain yield was higher in conventional tillage (CT) and chiselling (RT), respectively
in 1999 and 2000, but not significantly different from direct sowing (CA).
Irrigation regime statistically affected grain yield in both years while Water Use
Efficiency (WUE) in 1999 was 18.2 kg ha-1 mm-1 and 15.9 kg ha-1 mm-1 for CA and CT. In the
second year the chiselling tillage techniques (RT) gave higher WUE 18.6 kg ha-1 mm-1. The
average water content of the soil profile was higher in direct sowing (CA) in both years and in
all irrigation regimes combination.
