Despite the circumstances, I still wished that I could continue my education. So I chose a normal school and got into it — all this went on quietly, for both uniforms and text books are free besides bed and board. Only then did I feel ready to tell Mum about it. However, a deposit of ten yuan was required for registration; the sum was something unthinkable. For Mum, the fidget had lasted for half a month before she eventually sorted it out: her eyes were tearful the day she saw me to the door. Next, when I was appointed headmaster upon graduation, that day it turned out that Mum and I both had a sleepless night. Somehow I began: “You really deserve a good rest and now is the time!” She made no reply; she did it in tears.

Life is like a glass of wine; only the earnest know its taste, reaping all that life has to offer. You may detect the trace of life in a glass of wine — the brick red content is but the life blood; you may also reflect upon the vicissitude of life, for wine is sweet and at once bitter. The scent lingers while the benefits last. Mellowness to wine is what fulfillment is to life. So senility means mellowness: the composure is the color and the tactfulness the taste.
The above translation is a horror story.
A normal school is not known as a school for cultivating or training teachers.
Among the many verbs used in past tense, there is a verb in present tense, which is shocking.
Yuan is the unit for Renminbi (or China’s currency), but not for the time when the author (Lao She) was young. So "a deposit of ten yuan" is ridiculous.
The author comforts her mother with the words "You can have a rest from now on", but the meaning is distorted by the translator in a more complicated but incorrect expression.
"She made no reply, she did it in tears" makes no sense, as does "Her eyes were tearful". "She was tearful" is more appropriate.
