做一个传道之师

  很多教师都慨叹现在的学子难教,一代不如一代。其实最令他们头痛的并不是学业问题,而是学子的品行修养。成绩好,而品行有问题的不在少数,学业品行都存在问题的更是大有人在。不要说教师头痛,家长也是束手无策。
  现行的教育太注重一些可以量化的东西,常常忽略培养一个“人”所需要的根本条件。在学校,受表彰的学子通常是成绩或课外活动中的优异生,品行优良的很少被特别嘉奖;如果学子的学业成绩没有太大的问题,品行方面的表现大可以小而化之。
  这种成绩至上的市场需求带动的必然是一种畸形的教育市场的供给,其忽视和边缘化的结果,小则可能孕养出更多有才无德的人,大则可为导致世风日下的一个诱因。
  “师者,所谓传道受业解惑也。”价值观的传授应为教师的重要职责,在传授知识的同时,也应该教会学子怎么做人,特别是怎样做一个堂堂正正的好人。学会了做人,自然就懂得怎样做一个好学子。
  首先,师者和家长的言传身教对学子的影响至关重要。所谓润物细无声,那种潜移默化的影响最具有生命力。这虽然是老生常谈,但千真万确。有什么样的父母就有什么样的孩子,有什么样的教师就有什么样的学子。
  如果一个教师说一套,做一套,对学子来说,你的说教就会失去公信力。同样,父母为一点鸡毛蒜皮的事天天吵架、争执,他们的孩子如何能学会理解和关爱?不管是面对父母,或是教师,你的孩子或学子只有被你的话触动,被你的行为感动,你的思想才能真正转化为他们的思想。
  有的家长担心社会复杂,人心险恶,灌输太多正面的东西,孩子不够世故,会被人欺,长大后更会吃亏,其实这种担心完全没有必要。你给孩子种下善因,孩子就会用善良的眼睛去看这个世界,即使日后遭到风吹雨打,也只是锻炼了他们的翅膀,风雨过后,他们会变得更坚强。
  而如果种下的是恶因,孩子的眼睛就会蒙上一层阴霾,即使日后他们得到了一切,也难以体会到真善美的境界。
  其次,教师在对学子进行道德教化时要讲究一些方法。现在的学子最讨厌那种空洞的说教,对他们来说,对事实的接受比对理论的理解来得更有价值。我们都习惯直接告诉学子他们行为的对错,花了20分钟的力气,其影响顶多停留20分钟,因为大多数学子通常是听在耳里,而不装在心里的,他们自我反思的能力非常有限。
  教师如果能从教材中找到恰当的切入点,让学子直面具体的人或事,引导他们的头脑、耳朵和眼睛一起开动,逐渐进入你的谈论话题,效果才会开始形成。因为学子只有听进了,教师说的一切才有价值。
  再次,教师应该有强烈的责任感。十年树木,百年树人。教师这个职业难就难在他的育人上。如果说一个技工车坏了一个零件,还可以重新再车一个;可是一个教师如果耽误了一个学子,还可以重新再来过吗?
  一个教师如果只知道传授知识,教学停留在一个教书匠的层面,那无异于一个只知道施肥,不知道剪枝的园丁,无论如何称不上是一个师字。

Be a teacher who moulds the values of pupils

"Each new generation is worse than the previous one" is a common lament among teachers who feel that students these days are "hard to teach".

The biggest headache for teachers is not academic performance but the conduct and behaviour of students. There are students who do well academically but behave badly. And quite a number are wanting in both schoolwork and conduct. Even their parents are at a loss on how to help them.

The over-emphasis of our education system on things that are quantifiable often makes us overlook the basic conditions needed to help students to learn to conduct themselves properly.

Students are often commended for excelling in academic work and co-curricular activities, but seldom for their exemplary conduct. So long as they can keep up with their work, their conduct problems tend to be downplayed.

We are so obsessed with academic brilliance which the market demands of our students that we do not pay enough attention to character building. As a result, we may be producing students who have the ability but no virtues. Worse still, we may even contribute to a gradual degeneration of moral values.

Han Yu, a Tang dynasty scholar, once wrote that a teacher is one who conveys the truth, tutors a trade or skill and clarifies doubts.

Getting students to embrace proper values should be an important duty of teachers. Besides imparting knowledge, teachers should also help students become upright persons. When students are able to distinguish between right and wrong, they will also be able to conduct themselves appropriately.

Parents and teachers must set good examples. The significance of the subtle influence they exert in terms of what they say and what they do cannot be over-stated.

It may be cliched. But there is truth in the saying: "Like father like son". Teachers are, of course, also powerful role models for students.

A teacher who does not practise what he preaches will lose the respect of the students. By the same token, children whose parents fight daily over small matters are not likely to learn to become understanding and caring.

Children and students are likely to internalise what they are told by their parents and teachers only when they are truly touched by what they say and moved by what they do.

Some parents are concerned that their children who are brought up to be prim and proper may be ill-prepared for the complex society. And they will be at a disadvantage and may even be bullied. The worry is unnecessary.

A child who is brought up to look at life and the world positively will be able to recover from setbacks to become even stronger.

On the other hand, a child who is taught to view things negatively is unlikely to appreciate "the true, the good and the beautiful" even if he succeeds in getting everything that he sets out to achieve in life.

Teachers must be skilful when it comes to moral education. Students hate to be preached at. To them, facts speak louder than theories. We are in the habit of pointing out directly to students their mistakes when they behave inappropriately. They are, however, unlikely to register what we say as they have limited ability to reflect on what they have done.

Teachers should attempt to find relevant teaching material and focus the minds of students on real-life examples which they can relate to. Only then can they be engaged in a meaningful discussion and are more likely to take in what has been said.

Teachers must have a strong sense of responsibility. "It takes 10 years to grow a tree but a hundred years to bring up a generation of good men". And herein lies the challenge for teachers.

A technician who produces a faulty part can always make another one. But can a teacher start all over again if he fails to teach a student well?

A teacher who knows only how to impart knowledge is like a gardener who knows how to fertilise the plants but not how to prune them. It takes more than that to be respected as a teacher.
